About[]

Varmen was a Wasp-kinden Sentinel Sergeant originally from the Imperial Sixth Army. An elite soldier highly trained in the use of heavy armour like all Sentinels, Varmen took great pride in his skills and status, to the point that he deserted the army when the Sentinels were disbanded following the Battle of Malkan's Folly. After a period of dissolution in Helleron, Varmen made a new life for himself as a guide in the Commonweal, eventually sacrificing himself to help Thalric rescue Cheerwell Maker from unjust capture by Salme Elass

Ironclads[]

Shortly before the Battle of Masaki during The Twelve-Year War, Varmen is sent to lead his squad of Sentinels and a squad of Medium Infantry to protect a downed Heliopter and the squad of Fly-kinden scouts with it until re-inforcements arrive. Commonweal forces arrive first and surround the heliopter, delivering the news that the Sixth Army has been destroyed. Varmen and his forces hold out until Varmen's close friend Pellrec is badly wounded, and Varmen plays a gambit by challenging the leader of the attackers, Felipe Daless, to a duel. She accepts, and the two fight to a standstill until the Imperial Second Army arrives and sweeps the Commonwealers from the area.

The Last Ironclad[]

Varmen has reached the bottom of the barrel, finding himself unemployed and virtually unemployable in Helleron after having deserted the army following his wounding in, and the disbanding of the Sentinels after, the Battle of Malkan's Folly. In dire need of money, he is eventually forced to engage in a pit fight spectacle after his drug-addicted roommate steals his armour and sells it to the man blackmailing Varmen to fight. The only survivor of the skirmish, Varmen leaves Helleron for the Commonweal the very next day.

Heirs of the Blade[]

Acting as a guide through the disputed territories of the east Commonweal/west Empire, Varmen is put in contact with Thalric and Cheerwell by Hokiak. Taking them to the border of the Commonweal proper, he then stays with them beyond his paid duties, helping Thalric carry Cheerwell to Suon Ren after she collapses and meeting Maure, who becomes his lover. After Cheerwell recovers, Felipe Shah charges Varmen with her protection, and he and Maure stay with her and Thalric as they travel towards Leose. At some point along the way, Maure helps Varmen discover that Felipe Daless has since died, and Varmen realises that Prince Felipe likely knew of his daughter's history with him and never mentioned it.

When Cheerwell is unjustly taken prisoner by Salme Elass in a bid to lure out Tynisa, Varmen joins Thalric in a rescue. While Thalric frees Cheerwell, Varmen takes on the entire camp of Dragonfly nobles on his own, holding them off to let everyone else escape. He is finally brought down by Isendter Whitehand, who impales him with a spear through the only weakness in his armour: the hole punched by the snapbow shot which wounded him at Malkan's Folly. Varmen blunders away and dies soon after.
